Genesis 2.0 :: speakers playing three soundtracks & audio text [12mn-loop]

EN | Ex Nihilo 2.0 is a video installation offering, instead of metaphor, a reflection space setting up its will – of enjoyment – to pay tribute to the power of the image that always speaks about itself and makes fun of appearances ; always bearing in mind that smile is at the origin of grimace. An orgasm that laughs, sometimes cries, without being able to permanently relieve : the recommencement for eternity where silence and tension widen a condition that becomes fiction faced with the impertinence of a time exceeding us. Tides or waves... Sisyphus and a myth in full exaltation ; a layer of mother-of-pearl at the origin of a spring that never dries up : a woman, seven escapes, many shouts and a gaze wanting to be a caress to feed on intimacy, creating an encounter at the edge of the ineffable – between nature and culture... A trip to the end of breath ; a veil thrown on a reality full of uncertainty – since we never take flight differently than against the wind.

The flat spot beamer :: snapshots in time [flash beat & random control]

EN | Flat Spot is a video installation offering an experiment on the theme of « the certification of past-presence » [Derrida], as a space of expression, a convergence place between memories and hope, crystallization and repressed impulses. For abstracting oneself from reality and its contingencies, letting oneself be carried by a romantic scenario, between imaginary wanderings and preservation of appearances – as in a dream in which the highly idealized alterity arises in reference to oneself, in an impulse whose dramaturgical motives reveal the visceral need to be considered in one’s singularity when even the social link never stops to become precarious. Fragility as a sign, desire as a trace, close to a future melting in a past attempting to transpose the dyadic illusion into a world beyond existence. An imprint originated from an encounter at the low point of the lack which, launched by envy in its delicate alteration, « its ephemeral destiny » [Freud], ends up put in standby, both « closest and furthest from oneself » [Augustine]. Beyond the language : a silence fell with evanescent promises in filigree. An absence which, relieved of its consubstantial exteriority, remains silent; a presence which shows its enigmas without betraying, towards a dive in the heart of the intimate, calling a voice coming from elsewhere : the reversal of a drifting glance towards « dancing words » [Nietzsche].

︎︎︎︎︎︎  IN NUTS WE TRUST

Video 54mn-loop & performance, 2011

ISAN 0000-0002-CBBF-0000-N-0000-0000-5

EN | This performance will take place outdoors during the inauguration, in front of the exhibition site. Alya Noah, in overalls, locked in a cardboard box, will scrawl in chalk « in nuts we trust » on the walls that she will progressively cover, under the gaze of spectators who can observe her through multiple gaps. Only lightened by a little back up lamp, she will bustle to realize and complete her work by an ontological act of impregnation attempting to create an allegory between marking a territory and taking a position. The reality of the intervention is captured by an intramural camera rotating in sequence shot ; the scope of the action will naturally be bounded by the configuration of the premises ; the walls limiting the framing. A second camera will film the reactions of the audience for disseminating in real time the two shots inside the exhibition space and in this way bearing witness to the occurred event.

Alya Noah, through the simplicity of a spontaneous intentionality, asserts her elementary thoughts, as opposed to the sophistication of our postmodern world, and to its primitive origin: by analogy to cave paintings, the walls of the box follow those of caverns. More than mere words, in a bustling frenzy of the moment, she paradoxically questions the identity of the work by giving rise to doubt of its bedrock : referring to it in a reflexive dialectical, does the work maintain any significance or does it mainly contribute to ensure its own survival ? Furthermore is the imprint of the artist, sufficient to assure its influence over an external reality which therefore transformed into an abstract entity, sublimated beyond its materiality and prosaic appearance, creates distance from prejudices and other standard thinking ?

In nuts we trust is the transition from ritualization to idealization of an aesthetic gesture constructed in relation to a world supporting the realization of trivia : the gesture, being included in a process of autonomous creation injects sense where once inconsistency and confusion reigned ; composing, in addition, a partition where choreography and harmony come to life in the dynamic of the movement. Thus, Alya Noah, evolving beyond the usual time constraints, frees herself from the grip of the alienating everyday life and projects herself in an artificial space inducing a new temporality, ephemeral of course, but not precarious any more. While looking with a critical eye on her role as an artist, by the externalization of her words, the obsessive and pathetic character of her acts, she expresses singularity and leaves as a pledge traces of subjectivity to be legitimate.

Soundtrack :: The murmurs

EN | Lilly Rose is a Lilliput is a video installation housed in a black wooden monolith, consisting of a panel with a length of about 1,20 m and 20 cm thick, directly attached to the wall at approximately 1,40 m in height. Nine doors are included. Behind each one, an iPod touch broadcasts on a loop a video clip suggesting the evanescent world of childhood. So, on each screen, distinguished from an opaque black background that blends with the structure; a presence : Lilly Rose, dressed all in white, bandaged feet, plays tirelessly a foolish scenery, « la fleur en col ». The spectator, mobilized, is involved in the exploratory process as much as in the cognitive development necessary for the reconstruction of successive fragments into a whole : he is bent, manipulates the installation, interacts with the physicality of the art piece and experiences the playfulness of the system by discovering sound and images. Like in Alice in Wonderland, transported to the heart of the action, he retains control of the situation and determines its field of vision as he sees fit, opening or closing the doors as he wishes to place before his eyes.

Lilly Rose’s character, confronted throughout the sequences with the banality of daily life, the idolization of little trivial things or the relative efficiency of efforts, confronts the viewer with the feeling or the sensation of his own fragility. Introducing herself as a lilliputian, admittedly superficial but also full of poetry, Lilly Rose embodies the pathetic splendor of a ridiculously markdown woman, cute substitute of ordinary girls infantilized by the whole society implicitly conservative. Extracted from the material reality, absolved from liability of her actions, without any real self-consciousness, she draws attention, asserts herself apart from any form of seduction and dares her laughable humanity while vanishing into the role of the burlesque character so often devoted to men.

The miniature video, while combining new technology and contemporary dimension, tends to optimize the field of reality since giving a non-standardized statute to her image, Lilly Rose appears not to be a dematerialized representation, but as if she would occupy the entire place, without any reference to a fantasy or imaginary world. Thus, reality captures an omniscient point of view, beyond any symbolic space, without the idea of determined off-screen or temporality ; the physical and mental framework of the character is that of the installation. As a result, Lilly Rose, alien to her own finality, like a physical object, a little gesticulating stuffed doll of sound within our reach, invites the viewer bluntly to contemplate her. Confined in her microcosm, cloistered behind countless doors, defined by a closed intrapsychic universe, the almost obsessive repetitive gesture that she uses liberates her willy-nilly of the weight of loneliness and of the torments of captivity without taking away her innocence. She remains, moreover, separated into nine fragments.

︎︎︎︎︎︎ WILL YOU MARRY ME ?

Video installation, 2010.

7 videos :: 70mn-loop [7x10mn-loop]
ISAN 0000-0002-8C46-0000-A-0000-0000-7

EN | The installation consists of seven flat screens, large format, projecting simultaneously 7 videos, left on repeat, with initial durations of 10 minutes each. Flat screens have been privileged to minimize distractions. The object disappears and is replaced by a full screen image. A visual and audible presence only remains and the spectator, free in his mobility, wanders in front of a female body in action, kind of a carnal envelope divided into 7 parts, with 7 shots huddled together for generating a clash with the image and cause, if need be : an experience of libidinal type.

Will you marry me confronts acts apparently intimate with pictures broadcast in close-ups and sequence shots with their own intrinsic narratives. The observer is immersed in a woman’s story within her physical intimacy ; at the confines of her loneliness. The lack of context and decor allows to freely imagine her appearance or her surrounding. Together, the close ups, minimalist and effect-less, are plainly sufficient : the gestures express themselves with their literalism; they become part of a specific universe, the orchestration of an intent tending to scopophilia. The installation does not create any period of time. Each plan is offered to the viewers' gaze in its real length; the off-screen contributes, moreover, to conceive an artifact, a unit that assembles the parts to build a whole.

The project defines a contemporary woman, cut from her individuality, shorn by schizophrenic speeches on beauty and pleasure until the outbreak of a paroxysmal state : the disillusionment. The alienation is reinforced, moreover, by the application coverage through several video monitors. Body parts are disconnected from each other. In this way, this woman overexposed, deformed or even mutilated in her contour lines by her exacerbated desire to be incorporated by an idealized [if not fantasized] third party ; doesn’t she feel trapped by her willingness to seduce ? She cannot be considered in her finitude and is limited to a series of impersonal stimuli ; deprived of any materiality, she lives through the instrumentalisation of her gendered nature, without discernment but with determination. The ambiguity appears then : the stereotypical woman, annihilated in her flesh mutates and gives way to the accession of a physical woman, limitlessly fetishized, beyond any cultural reference. She remains multiple, removed from the world, encapsulated in a solitude that is stirred up by the pressures of a consumerist society pushing the individual to focus on oneself, to indulge in a narcissism inciting to an unfailing negation of its essence to the pinnacle of the self-regarding culture.

The video installation is thus based on an illustration mentioning the paradoxical relationship between an exhibited body and a suggested psyche. Intimacy, unveiled, is reinforced in the process of the shots. The viewer, as close as possible to the gestural temporality of the character, is overwhelmed by a feeling of unease, or at least stupor. Submitted to his own alienating structure through his visceral need to infuse signification where only an image is required ; isn’t he involved, therefore, to the dramaturgy based on narration ? The cellophane wrapping, evocative of a dream like a promise of the future, sends us back to the poeticized representation of this woman : wrapped, ready to be consumed, ingested and digested, she offers herself in a desperate attempt to answer as well to her needs to appeal than to her necessity to be loved. But this intrusive desire to be and to appear declines and her body parts, at first erotic turn out to be repelling and ridiculous, absorbed by the excess and escalation of the transformation.
